A provincial youth taekwondo competition was held in Fujian's Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone on May 21.

The four-day event was sponsored by the Sports Bureau and Education Department of Fujian province and formed part of the "Sunshine Sports" project. The project aims to promote sports and exercise among students and help them improve their level of fitness.

Competing at this year's event were 254 people, comprised of 31 teams from the province. They competed in taekwondo, sparring and tug of war, among other disciplines.

Athletes eligible for the competition were students currently enrolled in schools, members of the youth sports club and those who passed the physical examination by healthcare institutions.

Local officials said that the event will help to promote the development of Pingtan's sports sector.
