Shi Pai Yang

To the northwest of Pingtan Island and along the more than 500-meter sea surface in the west of Aocun Village stands a disc-shaped reef, which holds two tablet-shaped rocks. The combination of these rocks is like a big ship with two sails, riding on the crest of waves. This is the most famous natural scenic spot in Pingtan -- Shi Pai Yang, also known as the "Double-Sail Rock".

It takes about 10 minutes by boat from Aocun Village to arrive at the reef. Both sails are of coarse gray-white granite – with the one in the east of 33m height, 9m breast width, 8m thickness and 57m perimeter, and the one in the west of 17m height, 15m breast width, 8m thickness and 39,9m perimeter. The bottom of the two rocks are almost square shaped, standing upright on the reef. According to geological research, it is the largest granite spherical sea-wind-eroded rock across the world.

Tourists are attracted by this spectacular and magnificent reef. Chen Di, a traveler in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), praised it as the "Wondrous Spectacle". Phogo provided to China Daily
