Pingtan in South China's Fujian province launched a large volunteering activity to clean up the city on March 25.

Nearly 1,000 local residents took part in the activity, contributing to the municipal government's environmental protection efforts by clearing up trash from streets across the city.

Lin Shuyu, a sixth-grader, signed up for the activity with her classmates.

"It is quite tiresome to pick up trash for a whole morning, but it is meaningful," she said.
