The Pingtan and Minjiang River Estuary water resource utilization project will start construction at the end of November, once a feasibility report on the project was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission on Sept 30.

It is estimated that a total of 5.8 million people will benefit from the project, which is designed to cover a length of 78 kilometers and involve investment of 6.4 billion yuan ($953.71 million).

As the largest one of its kind in the province, the project will include a sluice in Jukou town and three water transfer routes, including ones that link to Fuzhou and Pingtan respectively.

Dazhangxi River, the largest tributary of Minjiang River in its lower reaches, has been chosen to serve as the main water resource of the project, with the trunk stream of Minjiang River being the supplementary source.

A plan of the project was approved by the Water Resources Ministry and the provincial government in September 2013. In February 2015, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) passed a proposal for the project.

The project's manager, Fuzhou Water Co's Pingtan branch has made proactive efforts in complying with the NDRC's review procedures.
