A Taiwan-registered fishing vessel was seen docked at the historical port on the morning of April 13, and departed for Taiwan loaded with 15 tons of local fish, the newspaper said.

Dong’ao town kicked off trade with Taiwan in the 1980s to become the first berth for Taiwan’s ships on the Chinese mainland. In 1981, it was officially authorized by central authorities to conduct small trade with Taiwan and became a bustling cross-Straits small trade point.

Authorities in Pingtan put the brakes on trade activities at the port three years ago because of insufficient conditions for customs supervision and management. Now trade has resumed after a local company paid for reconstruction work.

About five of Taiwan’s fishing boats are now conducting business in Dong’ao town.

Pingtan’s customs authorities said they have simplified procedures for local aquatic product companies.
