Zheng Shifu, 67, cleans the public restroom on Heping Road, Pingtan Times reported on April 8.

Every day for nearly two years, he quietly went about the work of keeping the facility sanitary, filling up the reservoir and the most troublesome task of scraping off illicit ads from the walls.

“The painted ads are the most difficult ones to erase,” said Zheng, as he put on a rubber glove on his right hand, and scoured the wall with stainless steel wire and a towel.

He suggested urban management authorities track down the offenders using the telephone number left on the ad, a method that has proved effective in big cities like Shenzhen.

Zheng doesn’t take credit for the cleanliness of the public toilets, and instead says it is the result of a public awareness in environment protection.

“Only if people move together and pay attention to their own hygiene can we expect a thoroughly tidy environment,” he said.
