Pingtan may add traffic light to downtown intersection

Local citizens in Pingtan county have been calling for installing a traffic light at an intersection downtown.

The three-way intersection between Cuiyuannan road and Wanbei road became more bustling after the opening of Wanbao Park, in addition to Chengzhong Primary School and a resettlement community around it.

The absence of a traffic light has often caused traffic disturbances, making road crossings more difficult for students as they either dash across the road or wait a long time until the road is cleared, Pingtan Times said.

Both students and adults have sounded off on the pressing matter.

"My classmates have been discussing the timeline of setting up a traffic light at the crossroad," said Nian Yuqi, a pupil at Chengzhong Primary School. "One of them has to take a detour to the next crossroad near the library to get across the street."

"Even we adults have to be very cautious when we are riding past this crossroad, not to mention the children," said a woman surnamed Lin. "Without a traffic light, any vehicle could pop out all of a sudden, which is extremely dangerous."

A tourist in Pingtan agreed, saying a traffic light will definitely help transportation safety.

But the public's appeal for a traffic light seems to take some more time to become reality, at least not until the extension of Wanbei road, which will make the three-way intersection a full crossroad.

"Once Wanbei road gets lengthened and runs across Cuiyuannan road, we will erect a traffic light," said Wu Lang, a traffic police officer.

He also said traffic flow at the intersection doesn't meet the threshold for installation of a traffic light.
